The best time of year for a Goa cruise

The best time of year for a Goa cruise

Season by season: weather, pricing, crowds and which months actually deliver the sunset you're picturing.

Goa has three distinct seasons on the water, and they are not equally good. Here is the honest version.

November to February — peak, and it earns it

Clear skies, calm water, comfortable evenings and the best sunsets of the year. This is when the river looks the way it does in the photographs.

It is also when everything is booked and priced accordingly. December weekends and New Year's Eve sell out months ahead. If your date is fixed in this window, book early — availability, not budget, is the constraint.

March to May — the quiet value window

Hot in the afternoon, excellent in the evening. Sailings from 5pm onwards are genuinely pleasant, prices soften, and you get considerably more vendor attention because everyone has capacity.

For corporate events, this is the smart booking window. The same programme costs less and gets run by a team that is not stretched across three events that night.

June to September — monsoon

Operations are reduced, some vessels dry-dock for maintenance, and sailings are weather-dependent. The river is dramatic and green, and the few sailings that run have a character of their own — but do not plan a wedding around them.

October — the shoulder

Increasingly reliable and still reasonably priced. A good bet if you want peak-season conditions without peak-season competition, provided you are comfortable with some weather risk.

Time of day matters more than month

Whatever the season, a 5:30pm to 6:30pm departure gives you the sunset. A 9pm sailing gives you the Panjim skyline lit up. Both are good. They are not the same evening, so pick deliberately.
